Tolkien Letter, Gutenberg Bible Leaf Highlight Rare Book Auction – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

Dallas-based Heritage Auctions is hosting a rare book auction featuring a handwritten letter from JRR Tolkien, a Gutenberg Bible sheet and other literary treasures.

Tolkien’s handwritten, autographed two-page letter to an enthusiastic reader dates back to the 1950s and is one of many centerpiece offerings at the auction, which runs until July 28. The current bid for the letter is $5,000.

Heritage is also auctioning a first edition set of Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy, including the original illustrated book jackets. The current bid for the set is $18,000.

The first volume page of the Gutenberg Bible is currently at $33,000. The watermarked page is from I Kings (I Samuel) 29:6-31:12.

The item currently attracting the highest bid is one of three known copies of James Otto Lewis: The Aboriginal Port Folio, complete with title page. The article is “a collection of portraits of the most famous chiefs of the Indians of North America”. According to Heritage, the lithograph plates are “a legendary publication, complete here with the rare title page, the three ‘Advertisement’ sheets and the eighty hand-coloured plates”.

This event promises something for all lovers of the rare and timeless, like coveted first editions of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland or Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick and a first edition of Casino Royale from ‘Ian Fleming, the Bond novel that started it all.
