The annual health inspection of school-owned vehicles that transport students from home to school will take place at the Mettupalayam Road Terminal here on May 21-22.
According to Transport Commissioner AS Sivakumar, there are around 900 school and university vans and buses.
Six teams, consisting of motor vehicle inspectors and assistant motor vehicle inspectors, were formed. Teams will inspect vehicles and verify that vehicles are in good mechanical condition, which involves inspecting brakes, doors, emergency windows, seats, space for bags and other features. The inspection will also take place simultaneously in Karaikal, Mahé and Yanam.
“We have asked school and college management to comply with the standards before the start of the school year. Vehicles must also be equipped with first aid kits and speed limiters. Drivers are also vetted and must have a minimum of five years’ experience. Notices will be issued to managements that have failed to meet vehicle fitness standards,” an official said.
Vehicle documents such as insurance, license, certificate of fitness, driver’s license, taxes and pollution control certificates will also be checked during the special drive.
