First images of 2023 Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Thieves and Mission: Impossible: Self Esteem Part 1 just screened at CinemaCon in Las Vegas and we’re here to tell you about it.

First of all, yes, Mission: Impossible: Self Esteem Part 1 is the official title of what we called for a long time Mission: Impossible 7 (which means, we assume, Mission: Impossible: Esteem, Part 2 will be the title of mission impossible 8). And even if it won’t be released for more than a year…its release date is JJuly 14, 2023—Paramount has screened a full trailer for the film. The reason? We suspect he’ll be attached to next month’s release of star Tom Cruise’s Other wholesale Blockbuster, Top Gun: Maverickalthough Paramount has not confirmed this at the time of publication.

Nevertheless, the trailer was action-packed, as you might expect, with a very unique-key to research apparently playing a major role. There were action scenes on horses, on a submarine, on top of a train as it went through a tunnel (much like the first film), and even a shot train flying from the side of a cliff. We also see Cruise and Hayley Atwell in a car chase through the streets of an ornate old town, in a very small Fiat yellow. All culminating with Cruise on a motorcycle accelerate a cliff, letting go motorcycle, and let it crash as he fires a parachute and glides to the ground. Filmed from above. For real. (What we know because at CinemaCon 2021, Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie showed a bunch of footage of it.)

The star and director also appeared on screen with a pre-recorded intro for the footage (as well as Top Gun: Maverick) filmed in the air, above a huge mountain range, as Cruise stood atop a plane. Literally. McQuarrie then boarded another plane alongside him to tell him that they needed to resume filming. Mission: Impossible 8. Then the three planes (two on screen, one filming) all banked left and took off. With Cruise still standing on it.

Because Paramount chose to show Top Gun: Maverick in its entirety (which we won’t cover because it’s more of an action movie, but i still have to I loved really really a lot), the rest of his presentation was a bit shorter than other studios. We sawsome logos for upcoming movies, like John Krasinski’s mystery Yes with Ryan Reynolds, as well as A quiet place on the first day. And then a reel of footage from a few other films which included two great genre films: Transformers: Rise of the Beasts and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts opens on June 9, 2023, and while there were only a few footage shots shown at CinemaCon, they were super cool. There was one from Optimus Prime, which looked a lot like the mix of Michael Bay and G1 designs we saw in Bumblebee. A few shots of star Anthony Ramos reacting to what we assume can only be giant robots coming towards him. One of him driving and seeing about six of the same Porschecrossing in front of him, and even a shot of a Transformer we think could be Arcee, who was riding next to a large Volkswagen van. You couldn’t quite tell what was going on overall, but it was obvious that the film will have the scale and scope of the previous one. Transformers movies. You can read more about the plot and Beast Wars tie-ins previous reports.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Thieves in theaters March 2, 2023 and unfortunately didn’t show much footage either. What we did see though were big and beautiful views, Chris Pine and Rege-Jean Page dressed in ornate armor, and most notably, several of the film’s characters standing in a kind of arena that moved around them. Like platforms that rise and fall from the ground. I will be honest. I don’t know much about it J&D so whether or not it’s something out of mythology is beyond me – but took a movie I wasn’t interested in and moved the dial for sure. It certainly seems like the franchise is treated with the utmost respect.

And with that, io9’s CinemaCon 2022 coverage comes to an end. Thank you very much for reading and see you next year.
