A man has died while being restrained by police after crashing a car through a fence in north Melbourne.
Victoria Police said they received reports a car crashed through a fence and into the front yard of a premises on Murphy Street in Preston around 4am on Sunday.
“Upon arrival, police observed the man inside the vehicle behaving erratically before exiting the vehicle and confronting police,” a spokesperson said in a statement.
“Officers attempted to restrain the agitated man before he appeared to become unresponsive.
“Officers present immediately called for medical assistance and performed CPR on the man, but he could not be revived.”
The Homicide Squad will investigate the death and are still investigating the circumstances.
The Professional Standards Command will oversee the investigation, per protocol when a person dies in police custody.
