Man City 4-3 Real Madrid highlights and reaction as Benzema brace opens Champions League tie

Verdict: City may have regrets

Manchester City’s ferocity and finesse threatened to overwhelm Champions League aristocrats Real Madrid in a thrilling semi-final first leg at the Etihad Stadium. But, like the monstrous villain in the thrillers, Spain’s aristocrats aren’t dead, even when they look like they’re buried under a flurry of goals.

It pulsated and played out in a cauldron of noise at the Etihad Stadium, with visiting supporters confined to the upper tier, allowing the most vocal Blues supporters from both corners of the South Stand to connect and create a wall of noise.

And City held a two-goal advantage on no less than three occasions as goals from Kevin De Bruyne, Gabriel Jesus, Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva gave them a first-leg advantage. But the genius of Karim Benzema and flying winger Vinicius Junior brought Real Madrid back into it.

It was a match as big, bouncy and beautiful as the two quarter-finals with Real’s villainous neighbors Atletico was restless, edgy and devoid of grace. And the brilliant result is that we can see it all again in the second leg at the Bernabeu in eight days, with everything to play for.
