The health care provider has been providing care at UofL since the 1980s, but now he officially cares for university athletes.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — University of Louisville Athletics and UofL Health have officially joined forces to provide student-athletes with the best possible health care.

The new partnership, which lasts eight years, concerns the medical cover of the 23 sports programs of the UofL.

UofL Health will provide access to its network of sports physicians, orthopedic surgeons, neurologists and primary care providers. The union, in addition to adding medical staff, will also provide student-athletes with health and performance equipment upgrades.

“It’s an exciting day for the University of Louisville,” said athletic director Josh Heird. “The commitment UofL Health makes to our student-athletes and our department will enable us to be a national leader in the medical and mental health care we provide to our student-athletes.

According to a press release from UofL Health, mental health services were a point of attention with the new partnership.

Prior to the partnership, two staff members provided mental health services to student-athletes, this number will now be increased to at least 10 mental health and performance professionals.

The partnership also includes injury rehabilitation services and equipment, medical coverage at sporting events, and resources supporting UofL’s new sports science department within the athletics department.
