RENO, Nev. (KOLO) — On Wednesday afternoon, roads were underwater and drivers were rescued from their cars as thunderstorms moved through the area.
All that downpour forced Kaia FIT Sierra in Midtown to temporarily close due to damp ceilings and floors.
“We walked into the studio and my heart sank,” owner Caren Roblie said.
She told KOLO8 News Now that water from the rain entered the suite above the gym and leaked through the ceiling and light fixtures.
“The hazard lights were on. It was dark and all I could see was what looked and felt like a waterfall,” she said.
The women’s gym is still recovering from the pandemic and had just moved to Midtown.
“Sometimes it’s like one thing after another, you know, you can’t help but feel that when you’ve only got maybe a month’s worth of breath and then all of a sudden something else happens,” Roblin said.
Roblin spent most of Thursday trying to assess the damage. The good news is that since the flooding only happened at the back of the studio, the rest of the space is still usable.
“I have to work with my partner, you know, he and I started moving everything you see out of the way. Our spin bikes, our mat, you know, just trying to make everything as safe and secure as possible,” Roblin said.
His plan is to reopen by Monday. However, ceiling and wall repairs will likely take a week or two.
Kaia FIT Sierra has other locations including west and south of Reno and Sparks. Current members are allowed to attend any of them while waiting for the studio to reopen.
Roblin said she was still unsure of the cost of the repairs, but was confident the business would bounce back.
“I lost 100 pounds here 12 years ago and it changed my life, so when I’m able to step in in 2018 and make this business work, all I’m going to do is keep it going. “, she said.
