Do Vancouver residents want a second COVID booster shot?

In early April, British Columbia health officials announced that fourth doses — or second boosters — of approved coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccines would be available in the province — but not for everyone.

The province’s spring COVID-19 vaccination campaign is offering a fourth dose to British Columbians deemed most at risk.

People 70 and older, residents of long-term care homes and Indigenous people over 55 are eligible for this final round of booster doses.

But what about the rest of the population?

British Columbia public health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said she does not plan to offer boosters to the general population in the near future, however, she indicated that more people may see offering this second vaccine. Alternatively, a longer term plan may be what unfolds.

“We might need an annual booster,” Henry said earlier in April.

Around the time the second booster shots for some B.C. residents were announced, Vancouver’s vaccination rates (two initial doses of an approved vaccine) were between 91 and 100 percent, a single quarter 81% behind (Downtown Eastside).

Given the overall participation of Vancouver residents in the province’s immunization program, if a second booster dose were offered to a wider population, what would be the response?

We polled readers to ask if they would receive a second COVID vaccine booster if made available, and a strong majority of local respondents (61.29%) said yes, they would.

In addition, nearly 8% of local respondents indicated that they had been offered a second booster dose and had already taken it.

When it came to agreeing with a single reminder, 9.43% of Vancouver residents surveyed said that was their position, while 12.9% of respondents said they only received their two initial doses.

Finally, 8.68% of local voters indicated that they had and will not take COVID vaccines.
