Coquihalla open for trucks


Commercial traffic is finally flowing onto the Coquihalla Highway after an all-day shutdown.

Private cars are not allowed on the route.


While a weather shutdown appears to have ended on the Coquihalla Highway, a crash near the Othello tunnels has re-closed the route.

The incident is reported about three miles north of Hope.

DriveBC says it expects major delays.

A scene review is in progress.

Meanwhile, a travel advisory remains in effect restricting the highway to commercial traffic only.

Treacherous conditions have closed the Coquihalla Highway between Merritt and Hope.

DriveBC reports freezing rain south of Merritt to just north of Hope.

No diversion is possible.

Further updates are expected this morning.

Elsewhere, Highway 23 is closed due to high avalanche danger between the vicinity of Mica Dam.

On the Trans-Canada Highway, work west of Revelstoke will begin at 8am and continue until 10am.

The route will be closed during the works and no detours are possible.

More avalanche control work will take place between Revelstoke and Golden, with an expected reopening at 1pm

On Highway 3, avalanche clearance west of Kootenay Pass is expected to close that route until 9 a.m.

Motorists can take Highway 3A and the Kootenay Lake Ferry as an alternate route.
