NEWBURGH, Ind. (WFIE) – Warrick County Cares and Ascension Saint Vincent offered mental health first aid training on Tuesday.
The training took place at the First Christian Church in Newburgh.
They say participants learned about different types of mental illnesses and how they can help in crisis situations.
Members of the faith community and health workers were among the course participants.
Ascension Nurse Kendra Hatfield says if you want to help someone, it’s just as important that you’re in a good mental state.
“If you’re not in the right place to reach out and help others, it may not always be helpful,” says Hatfield. “Learning the tools and making sure we take care of ourselves in a positive way so we can help others is really, really important.”
Hatfield says the stigma surrounding mental health is one of the main reasons many people don’t seek help.
She says more mental health first aid sessions are scheduled at Warrick Co. soon.
