Those booked include RTA Ravinder Singh Gill, Motor Vehicle Inspector Mahinder Pal, Registrar Gurcharan Singh, Data Entry Operator Jagsir Singh, Intermediaries Dharminder Pal and Sukhwinder Sukhi.

The VB arrested Gurcharan, Jagsir and Dharminder from Sangrur. They also seized Rs 40,000 bribes, in addition to numerous documents. A VB spokesperson said the involvement of Sangrur RTA, Motor Vehicle Inspector, office staff and intermediaries has come to the fore.

He said they used to accept bribes for issuing vehicle fitness certificates without following prescribed standards. He advised that every commercial vehicle must be physically inspected by the Motor Vehicle Inspector at his office.

Revealing the modus operandi, the spokesperson said officials colluding with officers blatantly issued fitness certificates instead of bribes ranging from Rs 2,800 to Rs 1,000 per vehicle.

He said the scam had been going on for eight years and more than 2,000 to 2,500 vehicles received a certificate of fitness each month.

It is not possible for one person to physically inspect such a large number of vehicles and Rs 35 to Rs 40 lakh bribe money was accepted every month, the spokesperson said, adding that the role of all officials posted to that office earlier would also be probed. .

The defendants were convicted under sections 420 and 120B of the IPC and sections 7 and 7A of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
