Vancouver and Surrey increase staff to tackle wave of problematic winter holes – BC

The cities of Vancouver and Surrey say they have expanded their workforces to handle the usual number of pothole calls in the middle of winter in the wake of extreme weather.

Since the beginning of the month, the city of Vancouver has responded to some 197 potholes — a 50 percent increase from the monthly average. The City of Surrey has also reported the same increase and around 300 calls for pothole repairs.

“Colors are caused by frequent freezing and thawing during seasonal changes and usually occur on older road surfaces,” Vancouver communications specialist Elayne Sun wrote in an email.

“With the recent record-breaking cold spell followed by rising temperatures, we expect more potholes on the roads in Vancouver.”

Neither Vancouver nor Surrey said they were behind on pothole repairs this season.

However, Vancouver has increased the capacity of its street operations team at the National Yard, adding more repair trucks and crews to its daily maintenance services.

Crews will have completed repairs on most current pothole service requests by early next week, Sun wrote.

Emergency requests are answered and completed with a same-day turnaround time, she added.

In an emailed statement, the City of Surrey said it has doubled its pit repair staff from eight to 16 and those workers are working longer hours to get the problem under control.

She also attributed the unusual winter “with continuous freezing” as contributing to the problem.

By email, Mainroad Lower Mainland Contracting said it would also carry out repairs in the pit in the coming days.

On Fridays, on several highways in the service area, drivers can expect their crew to complete the work between 8:30 AM and 3:30 PM.
