Under the sky of Paris | Georgia Darcy

Downing a city lane and riding several star flights, the kitsch surroundings of the Butterfly Club are perfect for Georgia Darcy French cabaret that mixes quality singing and wacky comedy. Fresh off a season at the Adelaide Cabaret Fringe Festival, Under Paris Skies has had various iterations over the past few years, including dinner theater. Here, it’s an hour of self-contained voice acting sprinkled with broad humor and a few over-the-top characters.

Despite a small audience on a cold Tuesday evening, Darcy sang with all her heart, channeling her French diva when she was not Australian herself, showcasing the songs and making them accessible to non-French speakers. His intros and riffs on translations of French words brought accessibility to the lyrics, even when they weren’t literally understood. She also goes above and beyond with a character called Julienne Carrot whose comfort smokes her conjugal blues.

Life being a paradox is by Darcy theme that she likes to riff and weave into the material. She explains that she’s probably too old and tired to continue doing cabaret, yet she loves it so much and can’t stop. From his performance, it’s easy to believe. She was having so much fun that she would probably do the show even if no one was watching.

Darcy has an incredible voice and an obvious passion for the French language in particular. She is not a native speaker but has an intimate knowledge of its tones and subtleties. From Edith Piaf to the more modern French vocals of Zaz, plus a few Jacques Brel and others, she can do it all and isn’t afraid to mix genres or inject zingers below her belt with her Aussie sled. .

simon walters accompanies on the keys. Walter is a good sport, immersed in corny jokes like playing an entire song with a rose in your mouth or joking back and forth about a missing helmet from the Eiffel Tower. french maid acolyte Cecile (Darcy’s real wife, Louise Lawson) is a silent comic presence. Not good at cleaning or any other practical work, she can open champagne bottles with her legs and walk around confusedly with snorkeling gear and a papier-mâché fish to the accompaniment of singing. She brings a bit of silly fun to the proceedings, especially in a two-way skit with Darcy to make a Peugeot purr.

Darcy comes across as a straight shooter (even complaining about too much chores), but when she sings, she transforms into a totally different person. The mix of nerd songs with fast and dirty gags feels very Franco-Aussie! Under Paris Skies is a feel-good winter warmer from a little-known (in Melbourne), but very talented artist.
