Tottenham player says he trained more to improve his fitness

Rodrigo Bentancur says he has undergone extra physical training in order to allow himself to have the best possible impact at Tottenham.

Bentancur arrived during the January transfer window and has already been hailed as “incredible” by Spurs boss Antonio Conte.

In an interview with the Evening Standard, he lifted the lid on the work he did to get started.

“As soon as I arrived, I just thought I had to make an impact. I asked for help from Daniel, my physical trainer, whom I also managed to bring here. I knew I had to be prepared because the English game is so intense and so fast, end to end,” he said.

Why doesn’t MLS compete with the biggest European leagues yet?

“I needed to prepare on many levels, with my lungs and fitness for the speed of the game. Professional footballers have a lot of free time, so that’s where ‘uncle’ Daniel comes in,” explains Bentancur.

“Spending your free time doing extra work and fitness work is positive. Since I arrived I have seen this mentality that Antonio has. It’s something that I really appreciate and like a lot too.

“He’s the kind of coach who is very intense with everything and he wants his players to always give the maximum with everything, 100% all the time.”

Conte is a demanding coach, and these are the standards he is trying to bring to Tottenham during his reign.

If the players respond, Spurs can really get going and there were signs of that before the disappointing 1-0 home defeat to Brighton last time out.

Bentancur will hope to play an important role in improving Tottenham under Conte and he is certainly going about it in the right way. Now the goal is Champions League qualification, with the pressure in every game.
