Thomas Alexander Baker, MD – Ogemaw County Herald

Thomas Alexander Baker, MD, 90, of Saginaw, Michigan, died Tuesday, July 26, 2022 at St. Francis Home in Saginaw.

He was born in April 1932, the son of Albert and Patricia (Mahoney) Baker in Lansing, MI.

He married the love of his life, Ophelia (Palevich) Baker on December 26, 1956, while a freshman in medical school at Wayne State University. Thomas graduated from Resurrection High School in Lansing, Michigan in 1950. He attended the University of Michigan for his bachelor’s degree and Wayne State University for medical school, graduating in 1958. Thomas and Ophelia had a practice family together in Freeland and later in West Branch. He completed a dermatology residency in 1972 at Henry Ford Hospital and continued a long dermatology practice in Saginaw, MI until his retirement in 1994.

Thomas and Ophelia raised six children in Freeland, before retiring to Gladwin, where they divided their time between homes in Sugar Springs and Sun City, Arizona. Thomas loved baseball, coaching his sons in baseball, hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, and playing cards.

Thomas is predeceased by his parents; his wife of 63 years; his sister and brother-in-law, Mary Ellen and John Engelgau; and her infant son.

He is survived by his six children, Thomas Jr. (Kathleen) of Troy, MI, Michael Sr. (Valerie) of West Point, New York, Patrick (Donna) of Hillsboro, Oregon, Christopher (Wendy) of Chandler, Arizona , Jean (Maxwell) McDonald of Gladwin, MI, and Anne of Freeland, MI. His children blessed him with 12 grandchildren, Elizabeth, Michael Jr., Rebecca, Pamela, Katherine, Jackson, Brenna, Gabrielle, Hunter, Maxwell Jr, Kathleen and Duncan. He was also blessed with ten great-grandchildren, Gabriela, Ophelia, Everett, Gabrielle, Virginia, Fischer, Baker, Ainsley, Daniel and Ezra.

In honor of the family’s wishes, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Agnes Catholic Church, St. Francis Home in Saginaw, Southern Care Hospice or a charity of your choice.

Funeral services took place.
