The Weather Network – The entire length of Rideau Canal Skateway is now open

Friday January 14, 2022, 10:55 AM — Green flag goes out for all 7.8 kilometers of skateway from 8 a.m. Friday, NCC announces

The Rideau Canal will open all 7.8 kilometers of the skateway Friday morning, the National Capital Commission has announced.

The 52nd skating season will begin Friday at 8am and there will be some changes from the pandemic-stricken 2021 season.

The NCC has explained that the general standards for opening a section of the canal are an ice thickness of 30 centimeters, which takes about 10 to 14 days at temperatures in the -10 C to -20 C range.

The neighboring Queen Elizabeth Driveway on the west side is open for exercise and closed to vehicles between Somerset Street West and Fifth Avenue on Saturdays and Sundays from 9am to 5pm
