Peanut and Mark take the idea of unlikely best friends to a new level.
Peanut is a squirrel who lives in Mark Longo’s house, and they do almost everything together.
Their bond began when Mark saw Peanut’s mother hit by a car. Sadly, she passed away, leaving the baby squirrel an orphan. No shelter could take him, and Peanut wasn’t ready to go back to the wilderness alone, so Mark took him in.

After bottle-feeding the squirrel for eight months, Mark decided that Peanut was ready to return to the wild. Peanut didn’t seem to feel the same.
“I released him in the garden, and a day and a half later I found him sitting on my porch, half of his tail missing. So here I am, eyes wide, as if I had given up as a human,” Mark said. “And I kind of opened the door, he ran in, and that was the last of Peanut’s wildlife career.”
Since the return of the squirrel, Mark, Peanut and Chloé the cat have lived in harmony for five years. They do everything together, from cooking to brushing their teeth to hanging out on the couch. His four-legged friend changed Mark’s life for the better.
“I’m grateful. And he’s made me a much better person in many ways. Kinder and more patient. And, you know, you tend to let a lot of little things slip by now,” Mark explains.
When they started sharing their journey online, they realized they could bring the joy they had to others too. Peanut even meets his fans, making them smile.
“It’s cool to just give back. I’m so lucky to have such an amazing following for him. I just want to take full advantage of doing my best and as much as possible,” Mark said. “Just sending love and joy to each other is the most important part of it all.”
