The Shell House Team Is Opening Topikós, a Greek Diner and Bar in the Former Bondi Beach Public Bar Space

A new Greek diner from a group of hospitality heavyweights is coming to Bondi – and it’s taking over the space formerly occupied by Bondi Beach Public Bar (BBPB). The Point Group, which is also behind Shell House and The Dolphin, and operated BBPB before its closure, will open Topikós Dining Room & Bar in mid-April, offering a sleek Greek dining experience with ace cocktails and wine, and a sprawling street- front terrace.

The group’s culinary director Joel Bickford (ex-Aria), who also oversees the menus at Shell House’s dining room, bars and bistro, will work with group executive chef Danny Corbett and newly appointed head chef Charles Woodward (ex-Pilu at Freshwater) on dishes for the bar and dining rooms. Inspiration is pulled from the islands of Greece, and their varying cuisines.

In the Dining Room, Greek dishes will be executed with Aussie produce, with a solid amount of meze, loads of vegetables, fresh seafood cooked over a charcoal grill and house-made pita.

“We’re staying true to Greek cuisine, calling on traditional recipes, cooking techniques and flavours, combined with incredible Aussie produce,” said Bickford in a statement. “We’re presenting our contemporary take on classic Greek dining. At the heart of the menu are the essentials, an olive oil program and house-made pita – a simple base to build out our menu from.”

The bar menu is more casual – there’ll be a variety of souvlaki, share platters and gyros, all loaded with seafood and meat. Other highlights will include split king prawns cooked on the grill saganaki-style with lemon, garlic and olive oil; woodfired octopus; and a feta-and-sweet-pepper filo pie.

Like its sibling The Dolphin, the wine list will be stacked with fun and funky drops that rotate regularly, chosen by the group’s food and beverage director, sommelier Alex Kirkwood. And the jazzy cocktail list by Josh Reynolds (The Dolphin, Shell House, ex-Scout) is packed with myriad spritzes, as well as a Baklava Old Fashioned.

Punters will be able to settle in the sleek dining room, pull up a seat at the 100-seat bar, or people-watch at one of 60 seats on the street-side terrace.

Topikós Dining Room & Bar is slated to open on April 14 at 180 Campbell Parade, Bondi Beach. Bookings are now open.
