The challenges faced by the modern fitness industry in India, and the side effects

On the surface of things, technology has helped fill in many gaps. In more ways than one, technology has been able to democratize and make possible different life experiences, which may have been difficult to do in the past. Even the fitness industry has seen benefits over time. Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, many have turned to online fitness training sessions, something that alone has helped make fitness accessible to the vast majority of people.

However, there is a dark side to everything that is rarely talked about. Science and technology have certainly helped connect people who are passionate about fitness, being healthy and yearning to live a healthy lifestyle. However, there has not been much development in the Indian fitness industry in the last 15-20 years.

Lots of technology, but no science

Just like Instagram, Tik-Tok, Zoom or what is the new popular social media platform this month. Every time a new fitness trend arrives in India, people start following it blindly. However, no one takes into account whether this new system will work for them and for their body type. It could do more harm than good in the future.

Everyone seems to have their own theory and direction, and they invest their beliefs in it. Some talk about ketogenic diets, intermittent fasting, CrossFit, and frequent intervals. But there is no basic rule of thumb to get fit and, more importantly, be healthy.

The Scientific Approach to Fitness

In India, we lack the basics and foundations to help people get fit. Most of the time, people mistake the simple difference between losing fat and losing weight. The underlying principles are different as the systems for men and women are because we build differently, and require different approaches to achieving pretty much the same goals. Being very diverse India also needs a diversified approach to become healthy and fit.

Fitness requires a scientific, personalized approach with appropriate dietary guidelines, tailored to individuals’ needs. An individual’s background and lifestyle should be taken into consideration as well as their medical condition and history.

Most of the online training courses are conducted by top rated fitness models/models. While they may be fit on their own, they lack the experience that is important to being a fitness trainer or expert. Many of them underwent initial training courses themselves, started their own practices, and are now training others. They usually pass on knowledge that has worked for them, not necessarily taking the athlete’s personal history into account. With no real experience, I feel they lack the credibility required to be coaches. It takes years to understand and provide the right guidance to help people get fit.

People tend to take fitness trainers at face value. They feel if they go to someone with an athletic body, they will be able to help them get in shape too. However, this is far from the truth.

The effect of inappropriate fitness techniques

Most non-beginner trainers tend to use Crossfit, HIIT, Boxing, Weight Lifting, Running, etc, as well as crappy diets like keto, intermittent fasting, and paleo to help transform for athletes or clients.

There is nothing wrong with any of the routine. But there is a lack of knowledge and understanding that not everything works for everyone. A routine that worked for one person doesn’t necessarily work for another. In turn, it may even lead to some serious side effects for some people.

Without proper approach and guidance, improperly managed fitness regimens can lead to serious injuries. It may only be physical at first, but it can take a toll on people psychologically. This can make them lose faith not only in the system but even in themselves. This resulted in them giving up their fitness goals for fear of further injuries. Mental strength is as essential to fitness and a healthy lifestyle as physical health and strength.

Fitness requires a healthy approach, starting with baby steps. Metabolism and genes play a large role in fitness and strength. Everyone needs their own time to achieve their fitness goals.

The personal touch between coach and athlete is vital. In addition, the added knowledge gathered from the relationship helps coaches develop the program. Changing up the routine from time to time gives athletes a psychological boost with a refreshing workout. It also avoids fatigue and athletes hitting the wall in their progression.

Online group sessions are affordable and can be effective and beneficial to many. People with minor health problems and injuries can easily achieve their goals if done correctly. However, individuals with mild to serious health issues will need specialized personal trainers. It will help them reach sustainable results through a scientific approach at their own pace.

Either way, it takes commitment on both sides to reach sustainable fitness goals that need to be done correctly and safely.
