SC Opinion on advocacy against no meat products in midday meals in Lakshadweep

The PIL filed by Ajmal Ahmed, a native of Kavaratti, alleged that Praful Khoda Patel, after taking office as UT administrator, prioritized the closure of farms run by the Livestock Department. The plea challenged the Animal Husbandry Director’s order from May last year, which ordered the immediate closure of all dairy farms. The plea claimed that this was done to implement the Animal Preservation Project (Regulation), 2021, which prohibits the slaughter of cows, calves and bulls.

The petitioner also challenged the administration’s decision to remove chicken and other meat products from the lunch menu for schoolchildren in Lakshadweep, alleging that it was an attack on habits island food.
