WASHINGTON, July 15, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Following the United States Supreme Court’s ruling overturning the constitutional right to abortion, a hearing was held yesterday at the District of Columbia Council Committee on government operations and facilities for DC board members Christina Henderson and Brianne K. Nadeau bills—The Enhancing Reproductive Health Protections Amendment Act of 2022 and The Human Rights Sanctuary Amendment Act of 2022—which seek to protect the access to abortion, to protect those who seek abortions, and to protect those who provide and assist with abortions in Washington, DC. Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington, DC congratulates Board Members Henderson and Nadeau for this bold legislation and thanks Committee Chairman Robert White for bringing these bills forward for a committee hearing.

“Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington, DC (PPMW) is committed to keeping abortion safe, legal, and accessible to all who come to us in need,” said PPMW CEO and President Dr. Laura Meyers. “Unfortunately, those who live in DC are vulnerable to the kinds of abortion restrictions we see imposed after Roe’s overthrow. Congress already prohibits DC from using its local tax dollars to cover abortion patients on Medicaid. PPMW is grateful to Board Members Henderson and Nadeau for introducing the legislation and Chairman Robert White for facilitating a speedy hearing on this legislation that will help protect abortion in DC.”

The Reproductive Health Protection Enhancement Amendment Act of 2022, sponsored by Councilman Henderson, would protect those who support and assist individuals to self-manage abortion and would protect those who provide, distribute or transfer any product used for self-managed abortion against sanctions.

The Human Rights Sanctuary Amendment Act of 2022, sponsored by Councilman Nadeau, would prevent DC from cooperating with out-of-state investigations seeking to impose civil or criminal liability for abortion care, contraceptive use and other protected behaviors. The bill also creates a private right of action for lawsuits against parties who successfully bring Texas SB8-style bounty claims against them for engaging in protected conduct.

“As the oldest and largest provider of reproductive health services in the region, Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington, D.C. is witnessing firsthand how congressional interference negatively affects our patients’ ability to safely access vital healthcare services,” said PPMW Medical Director Dr. Serina Floyd. . “Our health centers are already seeing an increase in the number of patients from other states seeking abortions and we are preparing to see greater increases in the coming weeks. This legislation is an encouraging step ensuring that providers can provide and that patients can receive the care they need without fear or reprisal.”

PPMW provides high quality and compassionate health care, including reproductive care; promotes sexual health; and champions reproductive rights and health equity for all.
