Phil Carville: Yogi for 2022

Yogi?

I’m not talking about a yoga practitioner. I’m talking about Yogi Berra, National Baseball Hall of Fame, and 18-time Yankees All-Star (1946-1963). Yogi is known for his baseball skills but also for his quotes – slang phrases that lack logic…but make you think and smile.

You can use Yogi quotes to guide and maintain your 2022 exercise program.

1. “When you come to a fork in the road, take it.” – That’s you in January 2022. Make your own fork and get fitter and healthier this year. Try something new.

2. “We make a lot of wrong mistakes.” The ‘mistake’ is falling off the exercise wagon. Stay in the cart and reap the results.

3. “It’s better to cut the pizza into fours because I’m not hungry enough to eat six.” – Yogi wisdom eating time is about portion control.

4. “You can watch a lot just by watching.” Watch yourself and watch the progress. Keep a fitness/exercise diary as it is the best way to motivate you. Genius yogi.

5. “I always thought the record would stay until it was broken.” – Keep track of your personal records. If you peak at 100 pounds on your leg workout, hit a pushup and then push in 110 pounds…that’s a personal record. Compete with yourself.

6. “I usually take a two-hour nap from one to four.” Sleep heals your brain, repairs the heart/blood vessels, makes proteins, builds hormones and much more. Get seven to nine hours each night and indulge in an afternoon nap.

7. “Pair in Three”. You will find working with friends stimulating and enjoyable. If you exercise alone, it is very easy to quit smoking. Pair it in a duo or a triple…just pair it up. Strength is in numbers.

8. “I don’t know if it was men or women fans running naked around the field. They had bags over their heads.” – As we get older our bodies change: Santa Claus stomachs, skinny legs, no heels, double chins, everything is flabby… We can become very androgynous. But if you play sports, you can keep a decent birthday suit until a very advanced age. Then you can run naked across the baseball fields…but keep that bag over your head so the big kids don’t know what Grandma did.

9. “It’s like deja vu all over again.” Change your routine! We do something different. Take a dance class, or a group workout, join a cycling class, try Pickleball, and then relax in the sauna or soak in the hot tub.

10. “It’s too late there.” Time flies by so start your exercise program now before it’s too late. Today is now, and tomorrow is too late.

11. “Baseball is 90% mental, the other half is physical.” The physical half of the exercise is easy. The 90% mental half is where we get stuck.

12. I will not buy my children an encyclopedia. Let them go to school as I did.” Be a role model for your children and grandchildren. Keep fit and strong.

13. “It’s not over until it’s over.” – Your body is a beautiful machine. It is designed for movement. Therefore, your exercise plan should be a life plan. Commit to exercising your whole life.

14. “You have to be very careful if you don’t know where you are going, because you may not get there.” Get a plan and stick to it.
