Newcastle rival Liverpool, Manchester United for Arnaut Danjuma

Newcastle United are reportedly in the running to sign Villarreal winger Arnaut Danjuma, who is a target for Premier League giants Liverpool and Manchester United.

According to a report by wire transfersNewcastle United are the latest entrant in the race to sign Villarreal’s Dutch forward Arnaut Danjuma in the pending transfer window.

Danjuma spent the early parts of his career in his home country, progressing through the youth academy at PSV Eindhoven before playing a stint with NEC Nijmegen, after which he played a stint with Belgian giants Club Brugge. The 24-year-old made his way to England in 2019 when he signed for Bournemouth.

After two promising seasons with the Cherries, producing a total of 17 goals and eight assists from 52 games, Danjuma moved to Villarreal last summer. Since joining the La Liga giants, he has flourished endlessly, contributing with nine goals and three assists in just 18 games across all competitions, while also breaking through for the Dutch national team.

Danjuma’s sudden explosion with the Yellow Submarine has put him on the radar of top clubs in England and Europe, with Liverpool, Manchester United and Newcastle United among the clubs interested in the seven-time capped Dutch international.

Liverpool linked with transfer for Danjuma for a while, which is understandable as Jurgen Klopp wants to bolster his attacking options. In the short term, the Reds must cover the absence of key forwards Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, who are on international duty during the Africa Cup of Nations.

In the long run, they will have to start drawing up a succession plan for the couple, who are approaching their thirties and entering the final year of their contract in the summer. Danjuma has therefore been identified as a viable option, with the Merseysiders poised to go after him in the ongoing campaign.

However, they face competition from arch-rival Manchester United, whose interest in the Dutchman comes as a bit of a surprise. The Red Devils already have an abundance of attacking talent on the books at Old Trafford, with Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood, Jesse Lingard, Anthony Martial, Amad Diallo and Anthony Elanga all able to play wide.

Amongst them, Martial is leaving this month, while Diallo could also be loaned out. At the same time, Lingard sees his contract expire at the end of the season. Even then, there seem to be plenty of options for the wider areas at Old Trafford. So the interest in signing Danjuma seems a bit puzzling.

Now Newcastle United have also emerged as a candidate for the 24-year-old Dutch winger. Staring at the prospect of relegation, the Magpies are ready to pour the money into reinforcements that can help keep them safe. Kieran Trippier has already arrived from Atletico Madrid, but there is still a lot of work to be done in the market.

Given their over-reliance on Allan Saint-Maximin to provide the creative spark in the final third, it would be a wise move to add a player like Danjuma, who can score and score goals. A player Howe has worked with before, it remains to be seen if he moves to St. James’ Park.
