New York State Police warn of phone scam – NBC New York

New York State Police are warning the public about a phone scam where callers apparently claim to be state troopers – urging the public not to share personal information if they receive a similar call.

According to the police, during these calls, the scammers say they are members of the state police and that there is a case against the person. They then ask for personal information.

Police say the phone number that appears in the call is 631-756-3300, which is a number used by the New York State Police, L Troop Headquarters on Long Island. However, New York State Police said neither they nor any other agency authorized the calls and would never ask for money or personal information over the phone.

Police advise anyone who receives such a call not to provide any personal information. Additionally, law enforcement is urging the public not to give out any personal information over the phone unless they are 100% sure they know who they are talking to. If there is any hesitation, hang up, police said.
