A groundbreaking ceremony was held Wednesday in Red Hook to unveil the newly renovated fitness room at the Joseph Miccio Community Center.
The remnants of Hurricane Ida destroyed the hall last year.
The renovations were made possible by the Brooklyn Nets.
The teens and children who live in New York City Housing Authority housing and belong to the community center wasted no time getting their first workout in the hall.
Luis Figueroa has been coming to the gym all his life. He, like many of his peers, has a safe space to train again.
When Ida hit, it caused a flood in the gym.
Upon learning of the damage, the Brooklyn Nets decided to step in and help.
The fitness room is now open and ready to serve this generation and many more to come.
