Nemanja Matic makes surprising Manchester United admission after Chelsea 1-1 draw

Nemanja Matic thinks Manchester United’s performance against Chelsea was an ‘improvement’.

United hosted Chelsea at Old Trafford on Thursday night. Chelsea took the lead in the second half through Marcos Alonso, but United immediately responded to the visitors breaking the deadlock with a Cristiano Ronaldo equaliser.

Although Chelsea were the better side throughout the game, they wasted in the final third. Thomas Tuchel’s side had 64 per cent possession and six shots on target to United’s three, but they couldn’t get the three points.

It was a pedestrian performance from United, but Matic explained after the game that he still thought it was an improvement.

“Yeah, I think that was obviously an improvement,” Matic told Sky Sports.

“We played against a very good team which is tactically almost perfect, technically also they have great players and they also have a great manager. I think we played a good game. I wouldn’t say we were much better than them, but it was a level playing field.

“I think 1-1 is a fair result. They had more chances than us, but I think 1-1 is a fair result. It’s always difficult to play against good teams, so we expected to a tough game, but tonight we looked a lot better than the last two weeks.

“I think it’s an improvement.”
