Biker killed by tire

A motorcyclist was killed by a flying tire on Highway 1 near Revelstoke on Sunday.

Police say they were called to an accident on the Trans-Canada Highway west of Revelstoke on July 3 at 2:20 p.m.

An initial investigation revealed that an F350 pickup truck traveling westbound from Alberta was towing a 16-foot single-axle utility trailer when suddenly it lost one of the trailer’s tires.

Police say the tire bounced into oncoming traffic, narrowly missing an eastbound motorcycle, but hit the rider of a second Harley Davidson motorcycle.

Sooke’s 55-year-old driver died at the scene despite rescue efforts from a passing doctor from Germany and a nurse, police said.

The passenger on the hit motorcycle was injured and taken to Royal Inland Hospital. The freeway was closed for several hours Sunday afternoon for an investigation.

Police are continuing the investigation with the assistance of BC Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement and the BC Coroners’ Service.

Anyone with information about the incident or dash cam footage of the drive prior to the collision can call BC Highway Patrol in Revelstoke at 250-814-8173.
