Machete attack at Vancouver rooming house leaves 4 life-changing injuries: police

Suspect lit suite on fire before attacking people with machetes, police say

A suspect is in custody after police said the man set fire to his rooming house on Saturday night (August 6) and attacked four people with a machete.

The Vancouver Police Department said officers were first called to the Granville entertainment district near Smithe Street around 10 p.m. to a report of the suite fire, but en route , things escalated with the man who allegedly attacked four people in the rooming house with a machete. .

When officers arrived, they shot the man and injured him, according to VPD. He was arrested and taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The four victims were also taken to hospital, but with much more serious injuries. VPD says they will probably be life changing.

The British Columbia Office of Independent Investigations is currently investigating VPD’s actions. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious injury or death.
