If you’re immersed in the local music scene, when Jay Ortega’s name pops up, bands DRT, Apartel and Holmes follow.

Apart from music, some people may know that he also runs a multimedia business.

However, on May 6, Ortega will present his music, multimedia work and artwork in “Single + Music Video Launch + Performance/Open Jam & Art Exhibit” at MCM Play in Biñan, Laguna.

The venue is a hub of mid-century modern furniture and art.

The new single is called “Better Man”.

“During the pandemic, I couldn’t see my band, Holmes, because we couldn’t get together,” Ortega said. “So I started writing songs that I planned to release as solo projects.”

While working on his new songs, he learned how to design, record, and use proper recording equipment and programs.

“I learned more and more to do everything on my own,” he revealed.

Ortega worked on songs with famed musician and producer Dan Gil, Monne Rodriguez, and music he recorded with the late Noli Aurillo.

“I wrote those songs with Noli and recorded them before Apartel and Holmes,” he said. “It means a lot to me that our hard work is finally being heard and even more so now that my good friend is gone.”

“It started my solo journey to release songs with just my name rather than a band. The pandemic gave me so much time to plan, write, record and give my songs a personal touch that was produced in my own studio, Pink Tank. I didn’t want to sit idle. I wanted to be productive despite all the restrictions and all the protocols.

“All the previous songs I’ve done have been written with longing for love, sexual tension, sexcapades as themes. And I thought it was time for a change. So ‘Better Man’ was born, which is gospel, a deep dive into my love and gratitude for my wife, Alia, who strengthened our resolve and love.

Music wasn’t the only thing Ortega kept busy with during the lockdown.

“I started painting again in a modernist style using acrylic on canvas,” he added.

The artwork will also be on display at the launch.

“These are my pandemic trophies,” Ortega summed up. “All the hard work, all the new things I’ve learned, all put into the best work of my career. I’m extremely proud of this phase of my life.

Jay Ortega’s “Single + Music Video Launch + Performance/Open Jam & Art Exhibit” will take place on May 6 at MCM Play in the town of Biñan, Laguna. Door opens at 6 p.m.
