Inmate after vehicle crashes into gates of Parliament Hill

Ottawa police took one person into custody after a vehicle slammed into the entrance gates of Parliament Hill early Wednesday morning.

At approximately 3:30 a.m. ET, an unauthorized vehicle drove through the Wellington Street entrance gates, but was prevented from entering by security barriers. According to the police, the damage to the door is minimal.

The Ottawa Police Service said in a news release that a nearby officer was able to arrest the driver without incident.

An investigation is ongoing and charges, according to police, are pending.

The accident was one of two bizarre incidents in downtown Ottawa on Wednesday morning. Later Wednesday morning, an amphibious tour bus crashed into the fence at 24 Sussex Drive, the Prime Minister’s unoccupied official residence.
