The IIO is investigating Vernon’s death.

The British Columbia Independent Police watchdog has shared more information about a death in Vernon it is investigating.

The Office of Independent Investigations says reports from Vernon RCMP indicate that “at approximately 7:25 a.m. on April 25, police attended a residence to transport a male to hospital…”

“The male was transported to hospital without incident but fell into medical distress shortly after arrival. The male was pronounced deceased shortly thereafter.”

The IIO was notified of the death shortly after it occurred and opened an investigation to determine the role, if any, of police actions or inactions in the death.

The British Columbia Police Independent Watchdog is investigating a death involving Vernon RCMP.

Although details of the incident are few, the Office of Independent Investigations confirms that the death occurred on April 25.

IIO spokeswoman Rebecca Whalen said the death did not occur in the Vernon cells, but the inquest was at the Vernon Detachment.

No other details were available other than to say the investigation “is open and ongoing.”

Vernon RCMP could not provide any details and directed any comments to the IOI.

The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia is a civilian-run police watchdog charged with investigating incidents of death or serious injury which may have been the result of the actions or inaction of a police officer, whether on duty or not.
