Ashton Kutcher recently revealed his battle with vasculitis.

  1. According to the UK’s National Health Service (NHS), vasculitis means inflammation of the blood vessels. It occurs when the body’s immune system attacks the veins, arteries and small capillaries.
  2. Inflammation is our immune system’s natural response to injury or infection. But in vasculitis, for some reason, the immune system attacks healthy blood vessels, causing them to swell and shrink. It can be triggered by infection or medication, although often the cause is unknown, the NHS said.
  3. Symptoms of vasculitis depend on the specific type and severity of the disease. Common symptoms include loss of appetite, weight loss, fatigue, rash, body aches, pains, and fever.
  4. The National Institute of Health (NIH) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services says that age, ethnicity, family history, and lifestyle factors such as smoking and drug use Illegal drugs can contribute to the risk of vasculitis. Apart from these, certain medications for high blood pressure, thyroid disease and infections may also contribute, the NIH added.
  5. Treatment of the disease is aimed at reducing inflammation. Doctors start treatment with over-the-counter medications, but for severe cases they are treated with steroids or other medications that reduce immune system activity.
