Hoboken Girl: Connor and Jared, it’s great to meet you virtually. Tell our readers about your entrees and your product.

CS/JP: Garnish is a team of chefs who specialize in creating premium vegan food items, with our flagship product being our range of handcrafted, vegan-friendly overnight oats.

Our Night Oats are formulated to balance flavor and nutritional value with
A combination that results in something simple, clean, and delicious. The composition in relation to the layers and structure of the product allows us to highlight its simplicity in an elegant way.

Everything we use is either for the purpose of achieving a specific flavor profile or nutritional value or both. And we only use whole fruit, nuts, seeds and oats to do this. There are certainly challenges that come with maintaining the level of standards we adhere to, but we take great pride in our culinary roots, and love to be creative with our one-of-a-kind flavor combinations!

HG: How did you start the business and how has it grown since then?

CS/JP: Today’s appetizers look very different than when they first started. The company was originally founded as a personal home chef service which launched its pilot program in Essex County, NJ in March of 2020. But even before we could complete our first scheduled service, we postponed the launch indefinitely, and soon after the state Closing has begun.

After about a year of trying to relaunch the concept in a post-pandemic world, we’ve decided to restructure the offering as well as add the option of contactless meal delivery. In early 2021, we began developing the menu and testing recipes for our first menu item: all-night oats.

Night oats were so popular within the test group that we never moved on to anything else, and in May of 2021 we officially launched a product line called Oats by Garnish and haven’t looked back since.

HG: Your overnight oats are gluten + dairy free. What is your ingredient selection process?

CS/JP: We consider ourselves the number one producer of overnight oats in space. For us, that means using only the best organic ingredients available so we can make something that’s clean, delicious and packed with all the right nutrients and vitamins your body needs.

We are very careful when it comes to how our ingredients are sourced. We love the idea of the place and have built some great relationships with local suppliers. We really try to learn and understand our partners’ processes before working with them – everything from ethical farming practices and techniques to ensuring that the facilities are actually gluten-free and dairy-free to reduce cross-contamination risks for our customers.

HG: Why is maintaining a gluten-free + dairy-free choice important to your business and consumers?

CS/JP: We see our business and our products as part of a much larger movement as it relates to the future of the plant-based economy. Our mission is to include food sustainability in people’s daily lives by promoting healthy lifestyle choices in the form of plant-based foods in a convenient, ready-to-eat form. The idea of a sustainable food system means a world in which we can achieve and maintain food security for all, and do so in an economically, socially and environmentally responsible manner. This is the vision we are working towards, and this idea influences everything we do.

HG: You emphasize sustainability and the importance of composting. How do you integrate this into your daily life?

CS/JP: One area we focus on is our goal of not wasting food. We achieve this by using almost completely stable ingredients such as nuts, seeds and oats. A good example of this is the process of using our own oat milk powder made from only organic, gluten-free oats. We only make the exact amount we need, which is important to ensure there is no waste and to avoid outsourcing with brands that may contain oils, gums or emulsifiers to increase shelf life.

Our fruit operation is also carefully managed. We use fresh and dried fruits in our dishes so that we can benefit from as much fruit as possible. Any part of the fruit we don’t use as a fresh ingredient, we dry it and use it as a garnish, while any part of the fruit we can’t eat, we compost through a company called Java’s Compost.

HG: You have partnered with many local companies to sell your product. What is the partner selection process? Where can we find your oats yet?

CS/JP: We are looking for partners who not only share our passion for the product itself, but also those who have strong missions aligned with ours. We are currently in coffee shops all over Northern New Jersey including The Hive, MoJO, ModCup, The Muse, Jola and The Coffee Potter to name a few!

We place great value on the relationships with our local partners as we consider them as ambassadors for our products and our brand. We recently had a really fun collaboration with our good friends at Modcup, who have great products, and launched Cold Oats a Night Beverage that features Dredger’s signature blend, which we definitely recommend to all the coffee lovers out there.

HG: On the topic of local sales, how have Hoboken, Jersey City, and the surrounding city communities impacted your sales and relationships?

CS/JP: This community is so important to us, and I think COVID-19 has made us all appreciate our neighbors, our amazing local businesses, and our local economy more than ever before. The past two years have not been the easiest for many people, and we believe that every person, no matter how big or small, has the potential to make a positive impact within their community.

We are so proud of our partnership with an incredible non-profit organization earlier this year called the Coalition for Food and Health Equity based in Hudson County, New Jersey. Our cause has always been health-driven and focused on the environment, and through our partnership with CFHE, we are now also beginning to act to address the challenges of food equity and access to nutritious, sustainable and plant-based foods.

Food insecurity is one of the drivers of economic inequality, and with the current inflation environment we are witnessing, rising food prices are making it difficult for families to get the nutrition they need to maintain a healthy diet. Through one of CFHE’s programs, The Hunger Project, we hand-deliver bowls of oats to individuals and families here in Hudson County and serve them a healthy breakfast every week. It’s a great program, and it really made us appreciate the wonderful people in this community even more.

We’ll have incredible flavors soon as our menu alternates with seasonal produce. To name a few, we are very excited to launch Golden Kiwi, London Fog and Lavender Fig.

HG: Last but not least, what is your favorite and bestselling flavor so far?

Jared: cardamom dates
Connor: peach chai
