The receiver is integrated with your Apple Watch to track your workout stats — exercise duration, heart rate, calories burned, etc. Users are also asked to leave their comments, give the exercise a difficulty score, and even throw a selfie after a shaggy sweat if they choose.
Coaches monitor this data to make adjustments to their programs: A higher heart rate on cardio day is likely to cause an adjustment, for example. In my case, Ben set up a meeting with me about four weeks into the program so we could talk about how the workouts felt for me and my body, especially in terms of my concern about an old injury, and we made some changes.
what we like
There are a lot of things to like in the future. The biggest one? the price. I’ve worked with personal trainers who charge over $100 an hour. An entire month of programming for $149 is a banging bargain besides –if The experience is comparable.
The future, of course, isn’t exactly the same as IRL training. But it’s not a totally negative experience where someone sends you a plan and that’s it. Ben took the initiative to ask me questions about the comments I left (even when the comments were “My ass will hate you tomorrow”). For me, someone who thrives with an accountability buddy, that was very motivating to stay on task. So it is the fact that your unbrushed data goes directly to them.
I loved that I knew exactly what I was going to do when I got into the gym. But I also enjoyed the variety of exercises I wouldn’t have programmed myself. This morning I did a ladder of clean dumbbells and a burpee. For the past week, I’ve been doing hip weighted pushers and cable machine presses. And while the variety is spicy and fun, studies have indicated that it can also help with motivation.
In the past, I’ve always felt the urge to connect with a coach I’ve been working with after the time I paid for was such a burden. But so far, my experience with Future has made me feel like the lines of communication are wide open. For example, if I don’t write any notes and I just “grade” an exercise, Ben sends me a message asking what I think of certain exercises. He’s also been very communicative about when he’s offline on vacation (and sent a shot of him and his wife skiing). In other words, you felt like you had a real boss.
What you can’t do
Although there are a large number of movements stored in the app, including relatively uncommon compound movements like glute bridge pushups that you crushed during the other day. But personally, with the right trainer, you’ll be able to experience a few things with a one-on-one trainer, which isn’t a traditional option in their exercise library.
Another caveat: Instructors will not be able to correct any issues with your model in real time. If there’s something you’re having trouble with or want to share, you can shoot videos of yourself doing a movement and ask your coach to check your level. But let’s be real, this is a whole other level of great accountability and agency on your part – this kind of thing might be better for individuals who have a bit of experience working on their own.
