Where the American diet went wrong
This trend of declining health and increasing weight and health complications ironically received great help from the US government almost 50 years ago. The government had long been looking for a way to “fix” the nation’s diet. Backed by questionable research, they eventually introduced the infamous “food pyramid” which discouraged the consumption of specific historically healthy foods and led to a dramatic increase in the consumption of unhealthy refined carbohydrates.

Since the government first established dietary guidelines in 1977, the food industry has completely changed the types of food it produces to our general detriment. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the weight of the average adult American today is almost 30 pounds heavier than the average adult American in 1977.

The Modern Plague of Insulin Resistance
The problem with the Standard American Diet is that your body has consistently high levels of insulin, which is a hormone that tells your body what to do with energy. Its main purpose is to regulate glucose levels in your blood. When there is too much insulin, you can develop insulin resistance.
According to WebMD, “insulin resistance occurs when your muscle, fat, and liver cells don’t respond well to insulin and can’t use glucose from your blood for energy. “To compensate for this, your pancreas produces more insulin. Over time, your blood sugar levels rise.”
