Yelm residents will soon have a new fitness mat to enjoy at Yelm City Park.

The construction of the platform is expected to start on May 9 and this platform is expected to open on May 28. It will be located in the corner lot near the Yelm Community Center and the old gravel parking lot.

The City of Yelm will also gravel the parking lot and install new sidewalks and picnic tables in the park, among other improvements like new grass in places.

“It’s all going to happen very quickly,” Yelm director of utilities Cody Colt told the Nisqually Valley News. “Everything will happen in the next month. … Sidewalks, picnic tables, everything will be in there.

Colt said the only delay he could possibly foresee is for the new sidewalks, but he said he’s pretty confident they’ll be completed on time as well.

Yelm City Council budgeted the $300,000 in park improvements in a budget amendment late last year.

The fitness mat itself is expected to cost around $120,000, but the city will only have to pay around $70,000 after local sponsorships and grants are applied. The city applied for a grant from the National Fitness Campaign and received the maximum award of $30,000.

In late April 2021, Yelm City Council passed a resolution to adopt and allocate funds for the National Fitness Campaign Fitness Pad. quality of life in cities, schools, parks and trails across America.

Part of the campaign includes a fitness ambassador program. Local gyms, as well as interested organizations and individuals, can come and help people with their workouts, Colt said.

Fitness enthusiasts will also be able to post their workouts to a national board to see how their routine matches up with others across the country.

The National Fitness Campaign also provides a mobile app that can guide people through their workouts, Colt said.

One benefit of the fitness pad’s location is that it’s adjacent to the splash pad, so parents can work out while their kids play in the water, Colt said. However, he noted that if the parents have younger children, it would probably be wise to watch them more closely.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the fitness mat is scheduled for May 28 at 10 a.m.

The fitness pad will include a multi-functional core workout area with shock-absorbing flooring, a squat section with plyometric box sets in three sizes with rubberized caps for a variety of workouts, and a push-up area with push rings and ladders complete with progressive support ledges for the feet.

There will also be a 360-degree lunge course with grip-treated lunge steps and multi-angle lunge boxes, a pull-up zone with pull-up bars and up/down pull-up rings, and a agility center in an open-floor multipurpose area. with agility points and an agility ladder.

Rounding out the offering will be double-height flex stations for core strengthening exercises equipped with cushions and grip bars.

The resolution passed at the end of April 2021 designated Yelm as a National Fitness City and partner of the National Fitness Campaign. Visit for more information.
