Another Vancouver Canucks game has been postponed.
The game against the Ottawa Senators was scheduled to take place on Saturday night, but now joins the long list of postponed Canucks games. It was first reported by Patrick Johnston of The Province and The Vancouver Sun.
A few hours later, the NHL announced the game and the Senators’ game against the Winnipeg Jets on January 15 was postponed due to capacity constraints. The game had to be played at 50% capacity. It appears that the league wants to wait for the capacity restrictions to be lifted so that teams can generate revenue.
The Canucks made a statement following the announcement of the competition.
“The decision was made proactively after consultations between the NHL, the Vancouver Canucks and BC provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry,” the statement said. “The game will be moved to a date later in the season when such restrictions can be relaxed or lifted.”
“COVID-19 cases continue to increase at a rapid pace, and we all need to adapt and be flexible as the pandemic evolves,” Michael Doyle, president, Canucks Sports & Entertainment, Business Operations, said in the statement. “We were hoping to play tomorrow, but we are at a key point in the pandemic, and given the scale of the event, everyone involved believes this is the right decision. We thank everyone for their patience and understanding.”
The Canucks’ last game was on New Year’s Day, which was a 5-2 win over the Seattle Kraken in Seattle. They last played at home on December 14, which was a 4-3 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets.
They were also scheduled to train on Friday at 8 Rinks in Burnaby, but instead did team workouts at the Rogers Arena.
“It sucks to be honest”, Tanner Pearson said of the game postponement per Rink Wide’s Jeff Paterson. “Practice all week to prepare for a game and then it gets postponed.”
‘We are not happy with it’ said Canucks head coach Bruce Boudreau per TSN’s Farhan Lalji. “It is what it is, but we want to play. We’re going to have 9 games in a row on the road. We’re just muddling through.”
The Canucks’ next game is at Sunrise on Tuesday to face the Florida Panthers. It is the first game of a five-game road trip. Several players are in the COVID protocol, including Elias Pettersson and Brock Boeser.
The team plans to travel to Florida on Sunday.
That will be nine consecutive games for the Canucks.
