Barcelona will make a sensational transfer offer for Manchester United playmaker Bruno Fernandes if they fail to sign Erling Haaland this summer, according to reports in Spain.

Barca have made Borussia Dortmund striker Haaland, 21, their priority ahead of his £64million breakout clause coming into effect at the end of the season.

But they face fierce competition from across Europe for one of the hottest properties in world football as Manchester City prepare to channel their resources to sign the Norwegian.

Joan Laporta knows it will take a huge effort to sign Haaland and he’s already making alternate plans in case his side falls short on the chase.

Blaugrana’s president has identified Fernandes, 27, as a secondary target amid the Portuguese’s faltering form at Old Trafford.

Erling Haaland is Barcelona’s No. 1 target, but signing him can be tricky

That is according to El Nacional, who argue that Barcelona would have to sacrifice one of Pedri or Gavi to make way for the former Sporting Lisbon star in the roster.

The report adds doubts whether United qualify for next season’s Champions League – they are currently seventh in the Premier League – could convince Fernandes to make the move to Camp Nou.

That said, Barca also face a battle to finish in the top four of La Liga as they are fifth in the table.

Fernandes was once the talisman of the Red Devils roster, but he has not lived up to the high standards he has set for himself this season, despite his tally of 14 goals or assists in 24 appearances.

He joined from Sporting in January 2020 on a deal worth £67.8 million and, remarkably, Barca were also fond of the player at the time.

Mirror Sport reported that the Catalan giants made a last-ditch effort to hijack United’s bid, but this ultimately proved futile as the Red Devils wrapped up the deal quickly.

Although Barça offered even a higher fee than United, Sporting were reluctant to accept their offer as they wanted to pay the bulk of the amount at the end of the 2019-20 season.

Fernandes soon began making himself indispensable to then-manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but his place in the team is not nearly as certain under interim manager Ralf Rangnick.

The Portugal international had to settle for a spot on the bench in Monday’s 1-0 defeat to Wolves and struggled to impress during his second half substitute appearance.

As the conventional number 10, Fernandes does not seem to fit into Rangnick’s 4-2-2-2 system, raising further questions about his long-term future at United.

That said, he will remain under contract until 2025 with an option for another year, so it could take a huge bid from Barcelona to bring in their secondary target.
