Angel Olsen Shares New Song “Big Time”: Listen

Last I heard from Angel Olsen, she was covering “Boyfriends” by Harry Styles and announcing a new album, Highligths, released in June. In March, Olsen released single “All The Good Times,” and now she’s sharing Highligthswhich strikes a decidedly more country tone than what we’ve heard from Olsen in the past.

“Big Time” also has a carefully crafted music video, which director Kimberly Stuckwisch describes below:

For “Big Time”, we decided to celebrate how humans identify and subvert old-school binary and societal/internalized gender roles through choreography, color and wardrobe. To exist outside of strict definitions is powerful and often has no place in film. It was our chance to have a positive reflection in space and to shout out to the world that you are more than what you are told to be.

“Big Time” is what happens when we don’t express our true selves but find freedom when we step out of the shadows into our most authentic selves. In the first rotation, the lighting is dull, the clothes are monochromatic, the dancing is monotonous… Gender-conforming roles are present. However, with each spin, something magical happens, our cast and Angel begin to come alive to feel free. We see the clothes lighten, the dancing intensify, and the once emotionless bar can barely contain the joy that erupts from everyone.

I’m proud to say that over 80% of our cast and 50% of our crew have identified as non-binary and gender non-conforming.
