80 years since the sinking of HMAS Canberra

Tuesday, August 9, 2022 marks the 80th anniversary of the sinking of HMAS Canberra, after being badly damaged in a surprise attack by a powerful Japanese naval force. 83 crew members lost their lives.

The Australian War Memorial will hold a special Last Post Ceremony to commemorate the event.

Dr Karl James, Head of Military History at the Australian War Memorial, joined ABC Canberra’s Georgia Stynes ​​in the afternoon to talk about HMAS Canberra and its history.
