How is it August already? The end of summer is fast approaching, we are still trying to process our many feelings about Nope, and we have to pack our calendar with ice cream parties, night markets and scavenger hunts, stat. Here are seven exciting pop-ups and events happening this weekend.
A SUMMER MARKET
Chinatown teahouse Steep is hosting a Summer Night Market this Saturday August 6th from 5-9pm. There will be food, drink, art and household goods vendors including Angry Egret Dinette, Thank You Coffee, Psychic Wines, Paper Plant Co., Gu Grocery and more.
A QUEER ICE CREAM COMPANY
Cuties, a black-owned community space for gay people in Los Angeles, is hosting a free ice cream party this Friday, August 5 at Sorry Not Sorry in West LA. It’s in collaboration with the upcoming Amazon Studios show, A league apartand there will be DJs, photo booths and a 1940s theme.
PARTICIPATE IN A TREASURE HUNT
The game is on – from now until Saturday August 27, you can participate in Prosperity Market’s LA Black Business Scavenger Hunt. The citywide search includes more than 50 local black-owned businesses, and clues can be found using a treasure map on their website. Earn points by visiting participating businesses, taking a photo and posting. Winners will receive prizes during the Prosperity Market pop-up on Saturday, August 27.
On Thursday, August 4, one of our favorite Long Beach bakeries, Gusto Bread, hosts Poncho’s Tlayudas from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Expect to feast on the traditional Oaxacan snack of blue and yellow corn tortillas filled with blood sausage, and more.
REFRIGERATE AND GRILL ALSO
Lunetta is hosting a Chill & Grill party on Saturday August 6 from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. There will be a live DJ, lawn games, frozen cocktails, and summer snacks like grilled sliders, sausages, ceviche, Aztec ribs, and more. Tickets are sold in tiers and cost between $30 and $275.
DAY OF THE FISHERMAN CELEBRATIONS
Celebrate Día del Pescador, or Fisherman’s Day, with a seafood festival at Socalo in Santa Monica. It’s happening Friday August 5 from 6-8pm, with a huge mariachi band, tiki cocktails and small plates like grilled octopus, Peruvian ceviche and scallop crudo.
PERSIAN CUISINE IN CHINATOWN
Persian pop-up Azizam will be at Pearl River Deli on Tuesday, August 9 with a fun summer menu. There will be kotlet, a beef and potato croquette, with pickled cabbage, yogurt with cucumbers, walnuts and golden raisins, as well as saffron and rose ice cream sandwiches. Meet them in Chinatown at 5 p.m.
